Using The ASP.NET GridView Control

The display of information from a database is a fairly standard requirement on most websites and, in some development environments, it can take a fair amount of programming to achieve. In ASP.NET, however, it is remarkably easy, thanks to the use of built-in data-bound controls. There are two types of data-bound controls: those which are designed to display multiple records and those which will display one record only. The GridView control, the workhorse of databinding in ASP.NET, falls into the first category. It automatically generates an HTML table and fills it with information from a given data source with each record in the database rendered as a row in the table.

When using Visual Web Developer the easiest way to create a GridView control is simply to explore the appropriate data source using the database explorer, then drag the appropriate table or view onto the page. This action creates both a DataSource object and a GridView object, both of which can be customised either in Design or Source view. If the listing you wish to display on the page is to be tabular, you may not need to change the default GridView. However, it is more usual that you will want to customize the way in which data is displayed.

In order to customize the GridView, you must ensure that the option to automatically display of all the fields in the database as columns in the HTML table is deactivated. This is done by setting the GridView’s AutoGenerateColumns attribute to False. Secondly, we can display data in a number of different ways. By default information is displayed in a BoundField, meaning that the data is displayed as text. By default, the heading displayed at the top of each column is simply the name of each field in the database. However, you can modify this by changing the HeaderText property of each BoundField element. Another useful property is DataFormatString which allow you to use a format string to control the display of data.

The GridView also offers you the option of displaying data in a choice of other HTML formats: CheckboxField, RadioButtonField, HyperlinkField, ButtonField and ImageField. The final type of field is CommandField which enables you to display links enabling the user to edit, delete or select rows of data.

For even greater flexibility, the GridView control also provides the TemplateField which allows you to place any HTML content you like in a given column and use databinding statements to embed information from the database as required. Template fields can even contain ASP.NET server controls.

West Australia fires raze dozens of homes

The wildfires blaze around the township of Toodyay

Nearly 40 homes have been razed in wildfires tearing through farming areas north of the Western Australian capital, Perth.

State Premier Colin Barnett declared a natural disaster, freeing up emergency funds for those in need.

The blazes have consumed about 13,400 hectares (33,000 acres) of land.

Wildfires are common during the summer, and experts had warned that this year’s fires could be particularly bad after one of the warmest winters on record.

Some parts of the country have also been suffering from years of drought, making them more susceptible to fire damage.

Two major blazes broke out on Tuesday afternoon local time in a wheat- and sheep-farming district, forcing the evacuation of Toodyay, a township, and threatening a second town, Badgingarra, further north.

Dead livestock

The state Fire and Emergency Services Authority (Fesa) said at least 37 houses had been destroyed.

Fesa spokesman Allen Gale said: “The people directly affected by the fire, obviously, want to get back to their properties, but the area is very unsafe.”

Many homes were destroyed in Toodyay, about 80 km (50 miles) north-east of Perth, where hundreds of firefighters were at work.

Two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and a third was treated for a heat-related illness. Farmers also reported livestock dying.

“It’s a devastating fire with great destruction,” the state premier told media.

Cooler conditions and water-bombing helicopters were expected to control the fires on Wednesday.

Investigators believe falling power lines sparked the Toodyay blaze, reported the West Australian newspaper.

Australia is still recovering from “Black Saturday” in February, when 173 people died and more than 2,000 homes were lost in the state of Victoria in the country’s worst natural disaster of modern times.

In the aftermath of “Black Saturday”, officials issued a new level of “catastrophic” fire warning.

Parts of Western Australia were given this “catastrophic” rating earlier on Wednesday.

Swine flu vaccine preparation ramps up: US health official

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States will commit one billion dollars toward the purchase of ingredients for a swine flu vaccine, Washington’s top health official said Sunday as US deaths from the virus continued to mount.

“There will be another one billion dollars worth of orders placed to get the bulk ingredients for an H1N1 vaccination,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told CNN television Sunday, adding that the final vaccine likely will be ready by October.

“Congress has agreed with the president that this is the number one priority, keeping Americans safe and secure,” she said, adding that US scientist are working “to get the shots in folks’ arms.”

Her remarks came as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 211 US deaths from the A(H1N1) virus, with some 37,000 cases confirmed — the highest level of death and infection of any country in the world.

Officials have warned that the virus could return with a vengeance in the the coming months. The virus, already deemed at pandemic levels by global health experts, is in more than 100 countries and is continuing to spread.

Last week, Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said clinical trials on a first candidate vaccine were expected to begin in August.

The tests would take “a couple of months” to determine whether the vaccine is safe and effective and what the appropriated dosage would be, Fauci said at a medical conference.

There is potential to allow battery powered electric vehicles to enhance the electric grid response by feeding electricity into the grid during peak air conditioning times (mid-afternoon) while allowing sufficient charge for expected evening use as determined by the vehicle’s predicted use profile. The bill also provides for “smart grid integration,” allowing for more efficient, effective delivery of electricity to accommodate the additional demands of plug-in electric vehicles.

For especially large electric vehicles, such as submarines, the chemical energy of the diesel-electric can be replaced by a nuclear reactor. People will not change their mode of transportation overnight. Unless there is a clear proven alternative then the change will be slow. A key advantage of electric or hybrid electric vehicles is their ability to recover braking energy as electricity to be restored to the on-board battery (regenerative braking) or sent back to the grid. Since electric vehicles use whatever electricity is delivered by their electrical utility/grid operator, electric vehicles can be made more or less efficient, polluting and expensive to run, by modifying the electrical generating stations.

Electric vehicles are hailed as the next big thing. But does the average Joe really know a lot about them. What is the expected range like. Does an EV’s range suffer when you really stick the boot in? Take it up a windy mountain road and will you be able to make it down the other side? Or will you be left at the summit because there is no more power left in the batteries.

If your EV runs out of charge on a deserted stretch of road, it is not like you can just hitch a ride to the nearest gas station and get a spare tank filled and take it back to your car. What are you going to do – Although electric vehicles have few direct emissions, all rely on energy created through electricity generation, and will usually emit pollution and generate waste, unless it is generated by renewable source power plants. Or will it be as simple matter of getting a replacement battery – who really knows?

Consumers want dependability first!

The thing about gas is that it is complete in its grip on the automobile industry. It is so readily available and used in nearly every facet of the industry. The fixed nature of a rail line makes it relatively easy to power electric vehicles through permanent overhead lines or electrified third rails, eliminating the need for heavy onboard batteries. First, advances in lithium-based battery technology, in large part driven by the consumer electronics industry, allow full-sized, highway-capable electric vehicles to be propelled as far on a single charge as conventional cars go on a single tank of gasoline. However, overall energy consumption and emissions would diminish because of the higher efficiency of electric vehicles over the entire cycle. “Would you like me to wash your windows too sir?” he says to you, smiling as he pumps more fossil fuel into your car. You barely acknowledge him. All part of everyday life and so easy to cling to. People dislike change especially if the alternative is so unclear.

Extol the virtues of alternative fuels as much as you want. But unless you can assure Mrs Soccer mom that her life will not be adversely affected, then average America will continue to be slow in the adoption of alternative fuels.

Quit Your Diet and Speed Up Metabolism Instead

    Exercising for at least 30 minutes everyday can help you fall asleep and sleep better.? However, don’t exercise too close to bedtime or it may keep you awake.

    Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly sugars and processed foods
    This will raise blood sugar and inhibit sleep. Eat a high-protein snack a few hours before going to bed. This may provide the L-tryptophan necessary to produce serotonin and melatonin.

    Avoid consuming caffeine
    For some people, caffeine is not metabolized efficiently, them to feel the effects long after consuming it. So an afternoon cup of coffee (or even tea) will keep some people from falling asleep.

    Avoid alcohol

    Although alcohol will make people drowsy, the effect is short lived and people will often wake up several hours later, unable to fall back asleep. Alcohol will also keep you from getting into the deeper stages of sleep, where your body does most of its healing.

    Take a hot shower, bath or sauna before bed
    When body temperature is raised in the late evening, it will fall at bedtime, helping you to sleep better.

    Use Your Bed For Sleeping Only
    If you are used to watching TV or doing work in bed, you may find it harder to relax and to think of the bed as a place to sleep.

    The quantity and quality of your sleep could make all the difference in keeping your health strong and giving you the energy to accomplish your work. We all have too much to do, so take time out and recharge yourself.
